“Nobilis-in-Morte” is intended to play off the still life and vanitas tradition in painting that often included and beautified game. There is an element in these that I hope will feel both constructed and in a contradictory way “found”, perhaps come upon in the basement of an old natural history museum (the specimens are quite old, borrowed from a College Biology department). In this work, I’m attempting to play off the romanticism of painting and the veracity of photography, creating an edginess surrounding the ”fact” of the specimens. In an artist statement, I state that I’m trying to create “tension between life and death, beauty and horror”.
