Made in the early 1990s, “Subliminal Messages and other 20th C. Concepts” involves projected television images (pre-internet!) to comment on various social interests- the dominance of media as a provider of experience, political corruption, consumerism, etc. I had become interested in Post Modern theory- the advertising and media generated image as a dominant cultural factor and the notion of the appropriated image as well. This work is full of scratched and denigrated negatives and angst, and takes the position of an anthropologist rummaging through the heap of 20th c. culture, finding bits and pieces of evidence that determined its ruin.
